On August 15th, we hosted our 4th annual Gender Free Haircut Club — and what a day it was. The studio filled with free haircuts, back-to-school supplies, makeup, fashion, drag and a whole lot of community, and we walked away with our hearts completely full.
Thank you to everyone who attended, supported, performed, donated or participated — you made the day exactly what it's supposed to be. A huge shoutout to Layla Taylor for coming by to share about her queer journey and for her beautiful words; they moved the whole room.
What the Gender Free Haircut Club is
The Gender Free Haircut Club is our signature event, where we provide free, gender-affirming haircuts to marginalized LGBTQ2S+ youth and communities. It's a fun — and often genuinely life-changing — day that lets people see themselves clearly, sometimes for the very first time, helping to shift gender dysphoria into euphoria.
That's the whole point: a chair that's yours, a cut that fits exactly who you are, and a room where no one has to explain themselves.
A day of self-expression
The club is about so much more than haircuts. It's a celebration of being exactly who you are:
- Free haircuts — gender-affirming cuts, no questions asked.
- Makeup, fashion and drag — try something new, or go all in.
- Community — performers, volunteers and neighbors who show up for one another.
- Supplies — this year, back-to-school supplies to send folks into the year ready.
Each year the day is open primarily to LGBTQIA+ youth, with adults invited during the final two hours. Spots are reserved online ahead of time so everyone gets the time they deserve in the chair — so if you, your kid, or someone you know could use a free, affirming cut, watch for when registration opens for next year's club.
No paperwork, no explanations
Everyone who comes to the club is treated exactly like any other client: a real consultation, a real cut, and the time to get it right. There's no form asking why you're here, and no one has to prove anything to sit down. That's by design — it's the heart of everything we do at Lucero.
